Victoria Park Lantern Festival

Community Roots

Our Activist & Community Roots

The Lantern Festival is a project of the Friends of Victoria Park (FOVP). The Friends came together in 1998 with the goal of turning around the apparent deterioration of one of St. John’s most significant and historic public green spaces. Thanks to a successful bid for a three-year block of funding under the Samuel and Saidye Bronfman Family Foundation’s Urban Issues Programme, the FOVP benefited early on from membership in a trans-Canadian peer network of community-minded non-profit organizations. It was an Urban Issues-sponsored exchange trip to Vancouver in 2000 that was to sow the seeds for the first Victoria Park Lantern Festival the following summer.
